Brew City 2016

Saturday I competed in the 2016 Brew City Salmon Tournament hosted out of Milwaukee WI. I had no clue where I was going to fish seeing Friday was a horrible day starting by cracking my oil reservoir cap and having to drive close to 100 miles round trip to get one. At 0530 when we were released I decided to let the entire field blow past me to see where the majority of them were going. As I suspected everyone blew north, which was my game plan but after seeing NOAA was a hair wrong on the wind direction/speed I decided to start a little deeper than normal in water I was familiar with. It didn't take long for the first board to scream back with a nice 6lb steelhead tail dancing at the end. The entire day wasn't a knockout day but we averaged 1-2 fish per hour. While my uncle was fighting what I thought was going to be a big laker, I looked at my downrigger and saw the rod tip bounce twice. After getting on the rod I noticed it was a 12-15lb laker that I really needed. Unfortunately it got off 15' behind the boat. After losing that fish, we went back to getting in the fish my uncle was tied into. As it got closer I could tell it wasn't that big but it had my 10 color leadcore hanging off of it, which would explain why it felt so big. That fish ended up being a 6lb coho. We then circled my wave point and picked off a very nice 11lb steelhead and another coho. With a bunch of big boats in super shallow, I decided to take a NW course and once in 170' rods started getting bit. The first fish that hit the net was a huge coho tipping the scales at a 11lb and change. The next rod to fire had a steelhead that would have ate the 11lber but after the typical cartwheel jump, that fish was off. Next to fire yeiled a 5lb chinook. Now with 6 fish in the box and with a little over an hour left, I decided to make a run south to fill our last four spots with lake trout. After a 10mi run, we were setting rods and it didn't take long for my downrigger to get hit by a 6lb laker. Unfortunately, our time ran out and we had to call it a day. Overall we ended the day 7 for 9 and took first place for the coho division and 4th place for the steelhead division. As tournaments go, this was the final big money tournament for the year on Lake Michigan. I am still on the bubble of whether or not I'm going to fish the Burnout Bash hosted out of Racine. I would like to say Thank you to my sponsors this season; The Beef Jerky Outlet Store in Franklin WI and Heritage Dental in Antioch Ill.
